Visitor guide

Everything you need to visit Kyoto Art Gallery (KAG) and buy contemporary Japanese art — in person or from home.

About KAG

Kyoto Art Gallery (KAG) is a contemporary art gallery founded in Kyoto, Japan in 2017. We represent 1,600 Japanese artists and hold a collection of 18,000 original works — Japanese painting (Nihonga), landscape, contemporary art, printmaking, and work influenced by Japanese pop culture.

The collection can be seen at our two galleries in Kyoto, 伍 GO and 廓 KURUWA, and bought online through Artsy. We have delivered works to collectors in 60 countries and 190 cities. Corporate clients include Louis Vuitton, MSIG, and Lexus.

Questions and answers

Do I need an appointment?

No appointment is needed for 伍 GO on weekdays. For KURUWA, please call or email before your visit, as the gallery is not always staffed. Weekend and holiday visits can be arranged by appointment. If you tell us the artists or works you want to see, we can have them ready.

Can I buy as a foreign visitor?

Absolutely. Introducing Japanese art to the world is central to what KAG does.

Do you speak English?

Yes. Everyday English is no problem, and we use translation tools for detailed explanations.

Can you ship internationally?

Yes. We have shipped to 60 countries and handle customs paperwork for you.

What can I buy for around US$800?

A high-quality original by a Japanese contemporary artist. Many visitors buy a piece as a lasting memory of their time in Kyoto.

Do I have to visit to buy?

No. You can buy from anywhere through our Artsy page.

Is a certificate of authenticity provided?

Yes, with every work.

Are the same works in the gallery and online?

Most are listed in both places, but some are only in the gallery or only on Artsy.

I'm new to collecting. Can you help?

Yes. Many collectors buy their very first artwork with us. Tell us what you like and we will suggest works.

KAG in Kyoto

伍 GO is in Shimogyo-ku, within walking distance of Higashi Honganji, Bukkoji, and Kenninji temples — an easy stop between landmarks. KURUWA is in Shimabara, near Umekoji Park and the Kyoto Railway Museum.

Spring and autumn are Kyoto's most beautiful and busiest seasons. Many collectors find that a work bought then becomes a way of holding on to the feeling of the city. In summer and winter the galleries are quiet, comfortable places to spend an unhurried hour.
