Everything has a life of its own.

At Kyoto Art Gallery (KAG), we believe Japan cannot be reduced to a single aesthetic.

Japan contains multitudes

Our collection of 18,000 works spans the full breadth of Japanese visual experience: the hush of an ink-washed landscape and the glare of a vending machine at midnight; the ritual precision of a tea bowl and the joyful chaos of an arcade.

This is not contradiction. It is a Japanese way of seeing, in which every object, space, and passing moment carries its own presence. KAG exists to bring that sensibility to collectors around the world — as a cultural encounter rather than a transaction.

What we do

Visitors often call KAG a hidden gem in Kyoto. Google reviews mention the warmth of our staff, the range of the collection, and how much there is to discover.

We work with 1,600 active Japanese artists across landscape, botanical, miniature, pop, and kawaii art. Behind the galleries is a network that collects original work from artists across Japan and delivers it to people around the world.

You do not have to be in Kyoto to collect. Hundreds of selected works are available through Artsy and shipped worldwide.
